Here's the last picture for tonight, more another day I guess... Another
picture of the "Strip" looking out from the Main Gate on Reynolds Avenue.
The locker club doesn't show, but would be just to our left, on the corner
in this photo. Then the empty lot, then the white building, another empty
lot, and some remains of a few more bars that somehow survived, though empty
now. Seems the tan building on the left was a bar named the Green Lantern?
If not, it was real close. Does anyone have a picture of the "Strip" from
1962-1965 era??? Please share it if so. Does anyone remember the names of
any of the bars on the "Strip"? If so, let's hear from you. Need the names,
and the stories that went with it! I think I hung out in the Green Lantern
more than the others, perhaps it was where most of the Deck Division hung
out. I remember a brunette that tended bar there named Josephine. Also once
a ba! rmaid stripped and danced on the bar while our Semmes Gunner's Mate
Johnson stood by the door in case the Shore Patrol came..... and yes they
did! He tried to block the door while the barmaid dashed for her clothes,
and she took cover just in time. Johnson had stalled the SPs, and they were
angry because they knew something was up, but were too late when they got
in. Beats the heck out of free peanuts with your beer! I can still hear the
songs; "Rambling Rose", and Brenda Lee singing "Am I Fool Number One", and a
few other "crying in your beer" songs. I get PTSD just thinking about it!
As you can see, all the bars on the right side of the street going out the gate are now gone. I guess when the sailors left, the place dried up! The EM Club building is still on the right side, about a half block over. I'm sorry I forgot to snap a photo of it. Lots of good times there too! Remember the band, and the crowds, and the girls!
Ok, now let's hear some of your stories!
