From webmaster at semmesddg18.org Thu Mar 6 01:49:12 2008 From: webmaster at semmesddg18.org (Webmaster) Date: Wed, 5 Mar 2008 20:49:12 -0500 Subject: [DDG18] Passing of a shipmate Message-ID: <001e01c87f2c$51ed1680$6501a8c0@ws5> Crew, I received this email from the son of one of our shipmates who has "passed over the bar". As a radioman, he is also listed as "A Silent Key". It is nice to see that even the families of our crew are interested in our ship, and the life long bonds serving aboard Semmes has created for many of us. Tom R. Hi Tom and/or webmaster, I got this email address from the website. My Dad, John H. Villa was among the commissioning crew as a radioman - RM3. He received final orders October 29, 2006 as a result of an accident. John spent his years in Charleston SC and was a great husband, and father to myself and a daughter Angela. John has two grandchildren. Dad mentioned his shipmates from time to time and was proud of his service. Seeing this pride in my father encouraged me to serve in the US Navy as well. Dad had just "found out" about and decided to join the online activity of DDG-18 and perhaps attend the next reunion. Dad had many friends and is missed by us all. A bit of trivia for me now, his CB handle in the 70's CB craze was "Striker" and mom was the "Lady Striker". Now that I have seen the "Striker 18 News" publication - I understand how that CB handle occurred to him.
