Here's a postcard I sent home dated 10/3/64. Joe Cavallero and I went on
liberty while we were here. There were lots of silver coins in circulation on
the island, so Joe and I, both coin collectors, tried to break as much paper
notes as possible to get change. We wandered quite far away and it was getting
late, so Joe and I flagged over a Shore Patrol jeep to get a ride back to the
ship. We jumped into the open jeep, and they pulled down a wooded road as it
was getting dark. The lights shined on a party of guys and gals that were
drinking and as they used to say, "petting"! Well Joe and I told the SPs that
we were fine, to let us out and we'd find our way back to the ship! A few gals
had even come over and vouched for us! Well, one guy said to let us go, and
the other said no, so we wound up being taked back to the ship by the SPs.
WE WOULD HAVE NEVER FOUND OUR WAY BACK!
The next day Joe and I couldn't wait for liberty call, and off we went looking
for that place. Sadly enough, we couldn't locate the place again. I believe
some of the girls we met in Bermuda were also in Fort Lauderdale when we were
there earlier. It was Spring Break I think.
